The research group Global Stock Image Market who surveyed picture agencies around the world has made the first part of its global survey available. The survey had been sent to Congress participants in London 2012.

In 2012 the GSIM Research Group carried out the first ever global survey on over 2,400 image suppliers on a truly worldwide basis. With a response rate of over ten per cent, the survey covers detailed information on 250 image suppliers that commercially trade usage rights on pre-produced still (photography, illustrations etc.) and moving images (video footages).

The findings of this survey are published in a series of three reports. You can download the individual reports FREE of charge by clicking here.

Carried out from April to August 2011 within the framework of ARROW PLUS, CEPIC gathered information on Orphan Works from a representative selection of commercial picture archives specialising in historic material.

28 agencies from different European countries replied to the survey. Their responses highlight inter alia reasons for orphaned works, ways of retrieving the rights holder but also costs of digitization and preservation. Additional information, examples of Orphan Works and a case study are provided in the appendix of the survey.

Ulrik Södergren reports from the CEPIC Video Seminar in Dresden, June 2009.

Moving images are everywhere. Traditional static signage and outdoor advertisement are replaced with large screens displaying moving images. Automatic tellers and vending machines have their simple button or text based user interfaces replaced by full colour touch screens. Cell phone displays now covers the whole front. With mobile Internet they transform into mobile multimedia devices capable of showing live broadcast or video on demand. There are already people broadcasting news, live from cell phones via services like Bambuser. The use and demand for moving image content is exploding.

This survey has been published in 2009 from the European Federation of Journalists.

In 2008, the critical state of the profession of photojournalists had been examined in a survey among the member unions of the European Federation of Journalists (EFJ). Major problems are for instance:

  • bad working conditions
  • unfair contracts
  • low remunerations

which result mainly from competition with amateur photographers, restriction on photography in public spaces but also from the financial crisis. According to the survey, solutions should be put forward by the unions.
