Do embedded rights metadata of photos survive social media systems?

This was the title of a presentation made at the IPTC conference on 12 March 2013 in Amsterdam on "machine readable rights".
More and more photos are shared over social media websites. Also professional photos. IPTC was approached by users who discovered that when they shared photos, the embedded metadata disapeared.
The IPTC study on social media and rights metadata was released on 12 March 2013. Using a "traffic light" value system, easy to understand, it shows the good and bad guys of social media sites form Google + to Facebook over Pinterest, Dropbox, Flickr, Twitpic etc.

© CTK Photobank. Metadata Conference 2012 in London.
BySarah SaundersIt was great to have the IPTC Photo Metadata Conference in London this year. Metadata has moved now to a central position in the image licensing industry. Our topic covered two aspects of search- finding the image and finding the rightsholders - both essential for the future of the image business.
The full agenda for the conference is shown on the IPTC web site, and I report here on the sessions I was closely involved in. Overall, the conference was a great success, with excellent speakers and very good feedback from attendees. Image search was a major topic, with sessions chaired by David Riecks including reports on visual search techniques, controlled vocabularies, crowd sourcing, linked data and indexing images for web search.

New campaign to embed information permanently in digital media

A picture may be worth 1,000 words, but permanently attached descriptions are worth a lot more as photos travel through the digital world. A campaign has been launched now to embed descriptive and rights information in digital media and to retain it during the whole life cycle.
The initiative has been launched by the International Press Telecommunications Council (IPTC), the American Association of Advertising Agencies (4A’s), and the Association of National Advertisers (ANA), with the support of trade organisations representing visual arts and photo agencies. It aims to establish the practice of applying descriptions and the copyright status of the content as metadata, and to embed it permanently during the electronic exchange of digital photo, text, audio or video files.

BySarah SaundersThat's easily said, but CEPIC has taken a concrete step to help by commissioning the CEPIC/IPTC Metadata Handbook, authored by Sarah Saunders of Electric Lane with the active participation of the IPTC Photometadata Working Group.
With 76 IPTC fields now available for use, people working in the image business need an overview of metadata planning where IPTC fields are seen in a workflow context. The aim of the guide is to show how companies can follow key principles and plan metadata to suit their own resources, environment, and customer profiles. Only enter data once. Don't use software which drops metadata. Plan your workflow to included metadata. Embed critical data in the image file. ..and so on.

Embedded Metadata Manifesto (2011)

The Manifesto was issued by the IPTC Photo Metadata Working Group in May 2011.
Photographers, film makers, videographers, illustrators, publishers, advertisers, designers, art directors, picture editors, librarians and curators all share the same problem: struggling to track rapidly expanding collections of digital media assets such as photos and video/film clips.
With that in mind we propose five guiding principles as our "Embedded Metadata Manifesto":
- Metadata is essential to describe, identify and track digital media and should be applied to all media items which are exchanged as files or by other means such as data streams.

ByMarc Pinter-KrainerOne of the challenges for ICOMP member One News Page’s “Have I Been Penalized” campaign, which seeks to raise awareness of search engine penalties, is that so many website owners assume that dramatic collapses in visitor traffic are normally triggered by the regular reshufflings of Google’s index.
As you know, Google is overwhelmingly dominant in search, commanding around 70% of the global internet search market and an even higher market share across Europe.
When Google reshuffles its web index, which is known colloquially as the “Google Dance” and which occurs roughly once every three months, it can lead to changes in a site’s Google rankings.
