Akg Images is looking for their new managing director in London


We are hiring a Managing Director to lead our office in Fulham, south-west London.

WHO WE ARE: akg-images is a Rights Managed photo agency specialising in fine art and history. We have an incredible archive of over ten million images covering the cultural history of the world and have been in the picture business for over seventy years. Our London office is in Fulham SW6 and we have a head office in Berlin and an additional office in Paris.


You will be leading a small team of 8 staff at our London office. As Managing Director, your responsibilities will include:

Finance & Strategy:

─        Monitoring quarterly sales figures and forecasting future sales.

─        Developing and implementing company strategies, both within the London office and in co-operation with the Berlin and Paris offices, to maximise revenue streams.

─        Authorising outgoing payments, including photographer royalties, staff salaries and pension payments.

─        Liaising with the Berlin and Paris offices on inter-office finances.

─        Authorising the annual End of Year accounts.

─        Renewing company insurance policies and contracts.

Human Resources:

─        Ensuring that the company complies with current HR legislation.

─        Hiring new staff: advertising vacancies, shortlisting candidates, interviewing candidates; negotiating and finalising employment contracts.

─        Holding staff appraisals and salary reviews.

─        Addressing and resolving any staff performance issues.

─        Organising ongoing training of staff where necessary.

─        Chairing regular staff meetings.

Picture Collection:

─        Researching and approaching new picture collections about possible representation; negotiating contracts and overseeing the import of new images into the archive.

─        Answering questions on image rights from clients or staff.

─        Liaising with our Account Executives on more complex pricing structures for individual projects and reviewing terms & conditions for price agreements.

─        Staying abreast with the latest developments in the picture library industry, copyright law, photographer relations; reporting on these to staff members if necessary.

─        Managing relationships with our photographers, partner agencies and print-on-demand suppliers.


─        Co-ordinating our attendance at upcoming trade fairs, both within the UK and internationally.

─        Managing the marketing budget for company listings, adverts, and promotional material.

─        Managing our monthly client newsletter: collating and suggesting story ideas, writing texts, quality-controlling image selections, creating the newsletter and email mailout, creating client lists, monitoring success.

─        Creating and updating pages on the akg-images website.

─        Representing the company at trade fairs, industry conferences and client meetings.



─        You should have a managerial background in image licensing, photography, publishing, or similar; with a strong understanding of reproduction fees and copyright legislation. Previous picture library experience would be highly advantageous.

─        You should have excellent administration and numeracy skills. A background in accountancy or finance, with experience of managing budgets and overseeing company accounts, would be highly advantageous.

─        You should have excellent communication and negotiation skills, with experience of increasing existing client bases and establishing new client relationships, as well as managing a small team of staff.

─        You should be aware of the latest developments in government legislation, copyright law, and technology relevant to the picture library industry.

─        You should have strong computer skills and experience of working with Digital Asset Management systems.

─        You should be efficient, reliable, personable and creative, with a good eye for detail and the ability to thrive under pressure.

─        German language skills would be advantageous, but are not essential.

─        A background in fine art or history would be highly advantageous.


SALARY: dependent on experience.

CONTRACT TYPE: permanent.

HOURS: full-time (Monday-Friday, 9am to 5.30pm).
