Copyright Hub launched

On 30 July, the Copyright Hub was launched in the UK, clearing the right on an image with one click and announcing new partnerships in the US and in Australia.

The lauch was carried out in a very British way, with Intellectual Property Minister, Baroness Neville-Rolf being able “with a single mouse click” to retrieve the image and clear the copyright of project partner and picture agency 4-Corner Images.

Baroness Neville-Rolf commented: “The Copyright Hub’s innovative use of new technology will unlock a treasure trove of content and ensure fair return for rights holders”.The Government is committed to making the UK the best place in Europe to innovate and grow a business and that is what the Digital Catapult is helping to do; – acting as a catalyst for growth in promising markets where the UK is leading the world.

Further the press release states: “The international potential of new technology was confirmed by the news that the Copyright Hub has agreed a new partnership with Australian licensing organisation the Copyright Agency.”

Partners to day include 4-Corner ImagesCapture an i-Publishing Consultants

What is the UK Copyright Hub about?

The goal of the Copyright Hub is to:

  •        To provide a multimedia portal to copyright-related information and find organisations who can help locate the source of the content (sign post function)
  • ·         To create open-source technology to help simplify and automate the process of getting permission (automation function)
  • ·         To make it easier to connect pieces of content to their rightholders (content sourcing function)

The EU funded project R.D.I., where CEPIC is work package leader (images) follows the same goal. The project aims at demonstrating how users of rights can easily identify rightholders on cross media platforms and trade rights using different business models.
