Changes in Brussels
With the election of a new European Parliament in May 2014, a new legislature has started in Brussels. The new elected parliament has started function in June 2014. Changes at European Commission follow changes at the European Parliament: the Commissioners will be selected and interviewed during the summer and will start office in October 2014.
With the rejection of the ACTA Treaty in July 2012, the European Parliament has shown that it cares about IP issues and that it can weight on the outcome. IP and copright will be the hot topics of the five years to come!
EU Copyright Reform will be topic of new EP legislature.
One major topic of the next five years will be a potential EU Copyright Reform. A public consultation was launched from December 2013 to March 2014 with up to 11,000 replies! CEPIC contributed a common answer to the consultation, but also BAPLA and BVPA. All answers have been published on the EU website.
EU White Paper on Copyright Reform.
For this reason, Michel Barnier, present Commissioner and initiator of the “Licenses for Europe” stakeholder dialogue (2013) will issue a white paper summarizing the conclusions of the consultations and setting the main lines of potential reforms. Commissioner Barnier is keen for his White Paper to be adopted by the end of July (23rd July). In the meantime a leaked version has appeared on the Internet.
