CEPIC Advocacy Update: Navigating the AI Act and Ensuring Transparency

CEPIC has been actively engaged in advocating for transparency and ethical considerations in the realm of Artificial Intelligence (AI). In response to the recent agreement on the AI Act, CEPIC recognises the need for careful drafting of the details. Notably, France has emerged as a leading voice in the discussions, prompting CEPIC to address the Interministerial Committee for Artificial Generative Intelligence with a letter dated 12th January 2024.

In the letter, CEPIC expressed gratitude for the opportunity to contribute to the Committee's crucial work. As an international non-profit association, CEPIC has consistently lobbied European institutions on regulatory matters impacting the visual media sector, with a primary focus on copyright issues. Members include image libraries, photographic agencies, and technology providers, all committed to ensuring the responsible use of AI, especially in generative AI. CEPIC's involvement in negotiations has specifically centred on transparency requirements and the right to object ("opt-out"). While welcoming the trialogue agreement on the EU AI Act in December 2023, CEPIC has also submitted proposed amendments, emphasising the importance of transparency obligations for creating a sustainable and ethically sound AI ecosystem.

The AI Act holds significant potential to establish an ethical framework for AI use in the EU, setting a global example. CEPIC underscores the critical role transparency obligations play in preventing biases, ensuring data security, and safeguarding the rights of content creators.

CEPIC remains dedicated to advocating for a transparent, ethically grounded AI landscape and looks forward to continued collaboration for a responsible and innovative future.
