Google Joins IPTC to Shape News Media Standards

We are excited to share a significant development in the realm of news media standards: Google LLC has officially become a Voting Member of the International Press Telecommunications Council (IPTC), a global technical standards body for the news media.

In this new role, Google will actively participate in decision-making processes concerning IPTC standards, alongside 26 other esteemed Voting Member companies. This partnership marks a pivotal moment in the evolution of media metadata standards, as Google's involvement will contribute to shaping the future of information accessibility and usability.

Google's collaboration with IPTC dates back several years, with notable milestones including the adoption of IPTC's rNews schema by schema.org in 2010 and a Google News Initiative grant awarded to IPTC in 2016. More recently, joint efforts have focused on enhancing Google image search results by integrating copyright, credit, and licensing information, as well as supporting the Digital Source Type property to identify content created by Generative AI engines.

We welcome Google's membership in IPTC and anticipate fruitful collaboration in advancing standards that promote transparency and trust in the digital ecosystem. As the digital landscape continues to evolve, this partnership underscores our collective commitment to ensuring the integrity and reliability of news media worldwide.
