In a recent exclusive interview with PetaPixel, Dr. Alessandra Sala, Senior Director of AI and Data Science at Shutterstock, offers a compelling message: photographers are essential to the future of generative AI. While AI tools like image generators have grown rapidly in popularity, Dr. Sala explains that these systems “fundamentally depend on real-world data” and that includes the creative work of professional photographers.
She points out that AI models learn from patterns in the data they are trained on. Without a steady flow of fresh, diverse, and ethically sourced photography, these models risk stagnation and bias. This is where the human touch is irreplaceable. Photographers don’t just supply images, they spark creativity, provide critical cultural context, and document emerging trends and events, from global movements to moments like the COVID-19 pandemic, when demand for specific, timely imagery became crucial.
Dr. Sala warns that popular or overused visuals often fail to reflect the richness and diversity of the real world. Shutterstock, which has inked licensing deals with tech giants like Google, Meta, Amazon, and OpenAI, is in a unique position thanks to its contributor base of millions. Through its AI Contributor Fund, the company compensates photographers whose IP has been used to train AI models, reflecting a growing recognition that visual creators must be included and supported in this evolving ecosystem.
In her words: “Photographers provide the crucial link to current events and emerging styles, ensuring AI remains relevant and representative of our ever-changing reality.”
