On 14.01, Julia Reda, remaining Pirate in the European Parliament and rapporteur on the implementation of Directive 2001/29/EC on Copyright in the Information Society has released her report on her website together with the list of meetings held.

“EU copyright rules are maladapted to the increase of cross-border cultural exchange on the web” she says.

The report will be presented on 20 January 2015 to the European Parliament’s Legal Affairs Committee.

Reda Meetings with Lobbyists

Expected timeline is the following:

January 20, 2015 Presentation of draft report before the Legal Affairs Committee (these meetings will be streamed)
February 17, 2015 Deadline for amendments
February 23/24, 2015 Discussion of these amendments in the Legal Affairs Committee
April 16, 2015 Vote in the Legal Affairs Committee
May 20, 2015 Vote in plenary

The discussions on this report are taking place in the context of the European Parliament’s own assessment of the current EU copyright law. Commissioner Oettinger has announced that the European Commission would be presenting a plan for reform as early as possible in 2015. If adopted, the report will not be legally binding for EU Member States but will set a strong political signal.
