Frankfurt am Main, Germany, 26 November 2024 — Photojournalist Tomas Stargardter has assumed the role of Editor-in-Chief of the European Pressphoto Agency B.V. (EPA Images), effective today.
“We are thrilled to welcome Tomas to EPA Images as our new Editor-in-Chief,” said Julia R. Arévalo, EPA Images’ President & CEO. “His extensive expertise in photojournalism, combined with his experience in editorial leadership, make him the ideal choice to lead our global team of visual journalists and editors. We are confident that he will help elevate EPA Images’ reputation for excellence and innovation in visual journalism.”
Stargardter, a German-Costa Rican national, brings more than 30 years of diverse experience in the visual media industry to his new role. Prior to joining EPA Images, he had a career with The Associated Press as a photo editor for the Latin America Desk, where he worked for just about a decade as part of an agile team that edited and planned coverage across Latin America and the Caribbean.
His career began in the mid-1990s, working as a photojournalist with The Associated Press, Agence France-Presse and La Prensa, Nicaragua’s largest daily newspaper, where he held multiple roles including Central America Chief Photographer and multimedia editor. He was instrumental in the transformation of La Prensa’s photo department, leading the transition from analog to digital media and establishing the country’s first multimedia news department.
“I am honored to assume this role at EPA Images,” said Stargardter. “Having worked with many talented individuals across the industry, I look forward to continuing the agency’s mission of delivering compelling visual content that informs, educates, and inspires audiences around the world. I am excited about the future of EPA Images and the opportunities that lie ahead for our team.”
Stargardter holds a Master’s degree in Image and Communication from the University of London (Goldsmiths College) and a Bachelor’s degree in Journalism from the University of Kansas (William Allen White School of Journalism). He is bilingual, speaking both English and Spanish.
In addition to his work in photojournalism, Stargardter is a skilled educator. He has taught photojournalism and multimedia production at universities in Nicaragua, including the Universidad Centro Americana and the American University of Managua, helping to nurture the next generation of visual journalists.
Stargardter’s appointment marks a new chapter for EPA Images as the agency continues to build on its legacy of journalistic excellence and commitment to producing high-quality visual content for global media.

About EPA Images
European Pressphoto Agency B.V. (rebranded as EPA Images) was created by an agreement among seven European news agencies in November 1984. The vision of the founders was driven by the demand for an independent quality picture service originally designed for the needs of the European media market. In early 2003, EPA Images made its service available to the worldwide market, beginning its global operations. In 2014, EPA Images launched its global video service. Today’s EPA photo and video services are based on the broad network of EPA Images’ visual journalists all over the world and on the daily production of its member agencies ANA-MPA, ANP, ANSA, EFE, KEYSTONE, LUSA, MIT and PAP, which are all market leaders in their respective countries.
